Mepps inline spinners for fishing over weed beds and higher in the water

Mepps Aglia Pompon is a version of the classic Aglia inline spinner fitted with a full red tail on the treble hook. The blade gives the familiar Aglia rotation, while the red pompon adds a clear strike point and a stronger colour accent that can trigger fish in rivers, lakes and shallow bays. Red tail as a strike point The red accent near the hook is especially useful when fish follow the lure but do not commit to the strike. The pompon holds attention behind the rotating blade and helps guide the attack towards the treble. It is a good choice for perch, chub, ide and pike, but also for trout, sea trout and salmon that can react to a strong irritating detail. Fishing higher in the water The large tail creates extra resistance in the water, helping the spinner stay higher during the retrieve. This makes Aglia Pompon useful when a classic inline spinner needs to be kept above obstacles, over weed beds or closer to the surface without dropping too quickly. Spinners Aglia Pompon

Red tail as a strike point

The red accent near the hook is especially useful when fish follow the lure but do not commit to the strike. The pompon holds attention behind the rotating blade and helps guide the attack towards the treble. It is a good choice for perch, chub, ide and pike, but also for trout, sea trout and salmon that can react to a strong irritating detail.

Fishing higher in the water

The large tail creates extra resistance in the water, helping the spinner stay higher during the retrieve. This makes Aglia Pompon useful when a classic inline spinner needs to be kept above obstacles, over weed beds or closer to the surface without dropping too quickly.

Where to fish Mepps Aglia Pompon

In lakes it is worth fishing over underwater humps, near reeds and above weed beds such as hornwort, elodea, milfoil and pondweed. In rivers it works well along reinforced banks, shallow runs, slower current seams, gravel bars and places where fish hold higher in the water. Larger sizes can also be fished through open water when pike are hunting beneath baitfish.

Which fish to target with Aglia Pompon

The smallest sizes #00, #0 and #1 suit light spinning for perch, chub, ide and trout. Medium sizes #2 and #3 are versatile for both rivers and lakes, especially when a visible lure is needed but a controlled, steady retrieve still matters. The largest sizes #4 and #5 are useful for pike, sea trout, salmon and bigger fish feeding in mid-water.

Silver and gold blade options

The silver version suits clear water, lower light and situations where predators are feeding on small baitfish. The gold blade works well in warmer light, slightly coloured water and on venues where pike, chub or ide respond better to a stronger, warmer flash. In both versions, the red pompon remains a clear strike point close to the treble hook.

Mepps
Mepps

Mepps is one of the most recognisable names in spinning lures. For many anglers, the brand immediately means classic inline spinners, stable blade rotation and simple, proven lures for predators. The range includes Mepps inline spinners and spoons, small models for trout and perch, as well as larger lures for pike, sea trout, salmon, zander and catfish.

Mepps inline spinners for rivers, lakes and canals

Inline spinners are the core of the Mepps range. The classic Aglia, with its wide blade, is well suited to slow and medium retrieves, still water, calmer current, fishing above vegetation and working along the bank. Aglia Long has a narrower blade, creates less resistance and is a better option for current and deeper presentations. Black Fury, Comet, Aglia Fluo, Aglia Neon and Aglia-e make it easier to match colour, contrast and lure action to water clarity, light level and fish activity.

Mepps Syclops spoons for bigger water

Mepps Syclops spoons are an important part of the range. They are designed for lakes, reservoirs, larger rivers and deeper areas where anglers need longer casting, a wider swimming action or a stronger side flash. Mepps spoons are useful when covering drop-offs, flats, channels, weed edges and places where pike, zander or bigger perch do not always react to a classic inline spinner.

How to choose a Mepps lure for different fish

For perch, trout, chub and ide, smaller Mepps spinners in sizes #00 to #2 are usually the most useful. For general river and lake spinning, sizes #2 and #3 are very versatile and can cover perch, trout, chub, ide, smaller pike and zander. For larger predators, it is worth choosing #4 and #5 models, bigger pike spinners, tandem designs or heavier spoons that create a stronger signal and remain visible in bigger water.

Aglia, Black Fury, Comet, Lusox, XD and other Mepps series

Mepps Aglia is the classic choice for slower retrieves and a wide range of venues. Black Fury is useful when a darker outline, stronger contrast and a clear visual target are needed. Comet has a versatile action and works well for perch, trout and river predators. Lusox is mainly associated with pike and deeper presentations, while XD is a good choice when the lure needs to fish lower in the water or work effectively in stronger current.

Choosing Mepps colours for fishing conditions

Silver Mepps spinners are a good choice in clearer water, brighter light and situations where predators react to a strong flash. Gold works well in slightly coloured water, under cloud cover and in venues with a warmer water tone. Copper is worth using for more cautious fish or softer light, while black, fluo and high-contrast versions help in stained water, cloudy weather and situations where a faster reaction strike is needed.

Mepps lures for pike, trout, perch and zander

The Mepps range makes it easy to build a lure box for most spinning venues. For small rivers and trout, small inline spinners in natural or contrasting colours are a strong starting point. For perch, small and medium Aglia, Comet, Black Fury and colour-accented versions are useful choices. For pike, larger spinners, Syclops spoons, Lusox and models with a stronger pressure wave and bigger profile are worth considering. For zander and fish holding deeper, heavier models, narrower blades and lures that can reach lower water layers are often the better option.

Why Mepps lures are worth keeping in the box

Mepps spinners and spoons are easy to fish, easy to feel through the rod and effective in many situations. They can quickly check fish activity and cover banks, shallow runs, deeper channels, flats, reed lines and underwater vegetation. A wide choice of sizes, colours and blade types makes it simple to match the lure to the season, water clarity, depth and target species. These are lures that fit both light spinning for perch and trout and stronger predator fishing for pike, sea trout, salmon, zander and catfish.
