Lucky John S-Shad Tail is a slim soft shad with an elongated ribbed body and a classic paddle tail. Its construction is designed to produce clear action at different retrieve speeds, making the lure suitable for perch, zander and other predatory fish.
The front and rear sections of the body have different cross-sections. This geometry increases the flexibility of the narrowing tail section and allows the paddle to start working easily. During the retrieve, the tail produces a regular movement while the soft body adds secondary motion, keeping the lure active during both steady retrieves and stepped presentations close to the bottom.
The ribbed body increases flexibility and strengthens the vibrations produced in the water. Its slim profile resembles a small baitfish, while the soft material allows the tail to respond to subtle movements of the rig. This is especially useful during slow fishing in cold water and when predators are unwilling to chase quickly retrieved lures.
The material contains flavoured salt, while the surface is coated with an oil carrying a distinct mackerel scent and taste. This attractant provides an additional stimulus when a fish takes the lure and may encourage it to hold on slightly longer, giving the angler more time to set the hook.
S-Shad Tail can be rigged on a standard jig head and worked with a lift-and-fall presentation, retrieved steadily above the bottom or fished through open water. Its slim body is also suitable for an offset hook, particularly when covering vegetation, submerged branches and other snaggy areas.
The range includes two sizes: 71 mm (2.8 in), intended mainly for lighter perch fishing, and 96 mm (3.8 in), which is well suited to zander and larger predators. The smaller version is supplied in packs of 7, while the larger size comes in packs of 5.
After fishing, the lures should be returned to their original packaging. This helps prevent the surface from drying out and allows the baits to be recoated with the scented oil remaining inside the pack.
Lucky John is best known for its wide range of spinning lures designed for perch, zander, pike, trout and other predatory fish. The range includes soft lures, wobblers, inline spinners and spoons that can be matched to different venues, fishing depths and retrieval styles.
Soft lures make up the largest part of the Lucky John range. It includes classic paddle-tail lures, slim profiles for jigging, curly-tail grubs, fork-tail lures, worms and imitations of creatures living close to the bottom. Series such as Tioga, Joco Shaker, S-Shad Tail, Makora, Kubira and Hogy Hog allow anglers to select the right action and size for rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
Lucky John wobblers include small models for trout, chub and perch, as well as larger lures designed for pike and zander. Depending on their construction, they can be retrieved steadily, worked with sharp twitches or used to explore deeper parts of the water column.
The range is complemented by inline spinners and spoons suitable for fishing in current, still waters and trout fisheries. Different sizes and profiles make it possible to choose a lure for slow presentations as well as faster searching retrieves.
Lucky John also offers a limited selection of spinning rods, which form a small addition to the brand’s extensive lure range.
The Lucky John range includes lures for light perch and trout fishing, classic jigging for zander and more powerful spinning for pike. When choosing a lure, it is worth considering the fishing depth, retrieval speed, size of the natural prey and current activity of the fish.
