SALMO Bullhead is a classic crankbait designed as a realistic imitation of a sculpin – one of the key prey species for trout in rivers and streams. Its compact body shape and wide lip create a strong, stable action that holds perfectly even in fast current.
The lure was developed primarily for targeting trout in flowing waters. Bullhead maintains its swimming stability when cast upstream or downstream, allowing precise coverage of riffles, deeper runs and areas behind submerged obstacles.
The series includes three sizes: 4, 6 and 8 cm, available in floating, sinking and Super Deep Runner versions. The SDR models are built to reach greater depths and effectively deflect off underwater structure, making them especially effective in deeper river sections and during trolling.
Although designed with trout fishing in mind, Bullhead is also successfully used for targeting zander and bass in larger rivers and reservoirs, particularly when fish are feeding close to the bottom.
For best results, cast slightly upstream and retrieve the lure in a natural arc across the current. In deeper spots, a slower retrieve with short pauses and subtle twitches increases effectiveness. The SDR versions are ideal for probing deep channels and near-bottom zones.
